The activities of the MIST are coordinated and enlivened by 5 transversal working groups :

WG4 : Instruments, data, methods
In order to position MIST in the international community, we performed a detailed bibliography research (387 documents) with the keywords « volcanic plume » (Web of Science). The analysis of this bibliographic data (Gargantext tool) permit to obtain a detailed picture of the research framework at the international level. Eight groups of papers have been highlighted, that permit to constrain three axes requiring further scientific work and to identify a transversal one (instrument data and method). Our analysis permit to demonstrate that the MIST strategy is fully relevant with respect to this international state of art. Thanks to this analysis and positioning in the international context, the added value of MIST will allow to dynamically link the different communities and to promote the interactions between them, with the aim at shaping a relevant structured community.
Figure 1 resumes our coordination (WP0) and research (WP1-4) strategy. The different communities (solid Earth, chemistry and atmospheric physics) have jointly defined the program of work and scientific issues to be investigated and will be represented in the steering committee (WP0). The steering committee will be constituted by the principal investigators from each domain and from the main laboratories. This assures dealing with these issues through multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary approaches. The 3 scientific WPs (1-3) allow MIST to target specific crucial questions highlighted by the community. The WP4, which is transversal to the three scientific WPs, also fosters links with French databases for homogenising and defining good practices, standards and procedures for data. These links are essential at French level in order to offer, at European level, useful products for optimal data dissemination and knowledge transfer (valorization), e.g. through ACTRIS and EPOS.
GDRE funding will permit the steering committee to meet twice per year and to organize one Workshop per year. The objectives of this committee would be to decide the strategy of the MIST group (proposals, funding, field campaign, etc.). The annual workshop will gather all the MIST participants to present scientific results and to develop trans-disciplinary partnerships, collaborations and student sharing.
Specifically, WP0 will work to facilitate communication and interaction between each WP’s and towards the end-users and society.
Volcanic activity is characterized by a very large variability in time and space, both during a specific eruptive event and between two separate events. WP0 coordination will guarantee that the exchanges in the frame of the GDRE address critical issues in order to harmonize the spatial-temporal resolution specific to each scientific community.
WP0 will facilitate the conception and the organization of specific actions (e.g. field campaigns; comparisons between models; training schools) to support the acquisition and the exploitation of datasets useful for a large and trans-disciplinary community. The coordination will support actions useful to identify and adopt new standards, especially for the acquisition of multi-parameter data sets and will support the development of open access software and data.
WP0 action will stimulate general and global observation on methods, for instance, about i) securing, valorization and dissemination of multidisciplinary datasets, ii) outreach and iii) education and teaching.
The WP0 will continuously monitor the national and international calls (e.g. projects; job offers) potentially interesting for the MIST “community”.
